Midwinter Mayhem

Posted by wayne tanner on January 12, 2008 - 12:36pm

Since I am here I am thinking of having a new yearly midwinter tradition of a bonfire/weeny roast/ cocktails. As there must be a reason what would be a historic or relevant event to celebrate in such a manner.....
As I had to douse my fire on New years eve as I thought I had to go out on a fire call ( irony) I have to justify such a conflagration (sp) to the ms's

One bag of Garbage

Posted by garym on November 26, 2007 - 9:29pm

Yeah, I know, I'm always the last person to know about anything around here:

"With the reduction to one bag of garbage for collection beginning January 1, 2008, the Committee stresses the importance of increasing household recycling as much material as possible."

Greenhorns revisted..again..

Posted by bub on September 10, 2007 - 2:57am

Cheers to Frank for all the work he has put in to rehabilitating Greenhorns, into the *horn* and doing a country/western/italian/SBP type of theme.Menu is good, prices fair, but most of all its the hello's you get(yes Frank its Dave here)from everyone when you go in.Now I know quite a few other places are the same in the community, and I shall touch on that later, but sticking to the country and western theme, I'd like to point out a prior post, of historical significance, of a gal from our area, who became known as a notorious(yet undeserved) figure of history, that being Cattle Kate . Maybe Frank can put a picture of her up on the wall? ;)

OS Habitat Could Use a Hand

Posted by garym on August 11, 2007 - 4:21pm

Ever wanted to learn some basic homebuilding skills? Here's a chance to put some productive time into these great summer days, and do a bit of community good in the process:

The Habitat for Humanity blitz build is well underway in Owen Sound.
It started last Saturday with an average of a hundred volunteers a day on site building three semi detached homes for six families.
Build co-chair Vivian Wade says they're running behind schedule and figures they'll take about a week longer than the planned two weeks.
She says they could still use some help.
Anyone interested can just show up at the build site on Third Avenue West in downtown Owen Sound.

Constituents Need to Get Involved

We notice that there are a number of our community councilors still wearing blinders when it comes to some issues at the council table.

Removing Paper Wasps

Posted by garym on June 24, 2007 - 12:18pm

Removing waspsHere's a pop-quiz for the eco-conscious cottagers out there: How do I relocate this paper-wasps nest? It sits right in the corner of a bed in our tent trailer, so even if I wanted to exterminate the lot, I'm not keen to have baby sleeping on poisoned plywood.

Probably serves me right for not opening the trailer for May 2-4

You are right on.

MXYZPTLK I am glad that you understood my comments. You are right on in your first paragraph. My original comments suggested that the Charleston tragedy may contribute to the "re-thinking" of firefighters missions. It will always be very difficult to make the judgement between saving lives and putting firefighters lives at undue risk to protect property.

Fire rescue.

Posted by skyhawk on June 20, 2007 - 9:32am

Why did nine brave and courageous firefighters have to die to save property in a furniture warehouse in Charleston, South Carolina?
The major objective of the mission was accomplished after safely evacuating the only two employees on the premises. Thereafter the focus of the firefighter's efforts should have been to contain the flames as best as possible from the outside of the building and to try to prevent the fire from spreading to other properties. However, hindsight is 20/20.

spanking

Posted by mxyzptlk on June 14, 2007 - 2:56pm

i read on the editorial page of the wednesday june 13 2007 owen sound sun times a letter sent in by former mayor carl (ig)noble (i love that ... thanks whoever coined that one). in his letter to the editor he supports the notion of spanking to teach respect. given the antics and lack of respect shown by some former and current members of council, methinks someones mommy didnt spank them enough!
