A Quarry on the Sauble River?

Posted by mxyzptlk on January 1, 2008 - 4:31pm

Everest Tree Farms Inc recently made their third application for a licence to operate a Category 2 "Below Groundwater" quarry on Part Lot 12 Concession 10 Amabel Twsp in the Town of South Bruce Peninsula. The location of the proposed quarry is near the junction of the Sauble River and Spring Creek, a well know fish sanctuary and habitat. In order to get the licence they must also get amendments to the Official Plan and Zoning Bylaws. The property is currently zoned Agricultural and used for the tree farm. They are proposing to dig a 16 meter deep hole (think 4 or 5 story building) into the bedrock adjacent to the Sauble River to extract 'decorative' stone that is available elsewhere in the municipality in areas already designated for Industrial Extraction.

Hepworth

Posted by bub on December 22, 2004 - 10:22pm

So we now come upon Hepworth

on our continuing and edge of your seat tour of South Bruce Peninsula .Now Hepworth is a bustling crossroads, that is home to a beautiful Canadian Legion branch with a log theme, one of the busiest Timmies you will ever see, and some nice shops and even a local knitter that supplies Highland dancing outfits throughout the world. There are still standing some original heritage buildings , and some have been restored to their former glory.
Hepworth , the name, has a quaint history behind it. The area was owned by William Plowes who laid out a plan for a new village, and asked a local minister to suggest a name, which he the suggested the name Epworth , being the birthplace of John Wesley. A mispronunciation of the name became Hepworth, formed in the mid 1860’s.
Several sawmills opened and prospered on the local forests, as well as a post office and a boom to the area, a railway stop .It really gained prominence when in the 1890’s it was designated by a few investors that this would be a major oil producing area , on the advice of a well known Pennsylvania oil man.
After a few failed attempts, finally when the local school principal, E.P.Roe, formed a company and in August 1900, hit natural gas. It was used locally for years, and the Standard Oil Company gained leases on quite a few acres. There was no oil, but was, and still is a place for natural gas.
You can read more about it that I posted awhile back (its at the bottom of that blog)
Next stop, Wiarton, home of Willie!

Perseids washout..but not all is lost!

Posted by bub on August 13, 2004 - 11:35pm

So..here I was..all excited and anxiously awaiting the annual shower, but got a totally different kind of shower..yes rain..rain and more rain..and with that clouds. So much for my well thought out plans for seeing the Perseids,so I fell back to plan B.

I packed up the cot, rolled up the blanket, and put away the good stuff and rolled into the neighbourhood pub,Greenhorns. As I pulled in, I get the friendly greeting from Karen, or as we all know her, Super Scrapper, who has discovered a new hobby, with tales and jokes that are guaranteed to keep a smile on your face.

Behind the bar, yes she is older than 16, is Lisa.Lisa is the new young smiling face behind the bar,and is recovering from a broken elbow. When she first told me this..I thought.. oh here we go again..she did it trying her athletic abilities on the trampoline..or fell doing the 20 k marathon. It seems, alas, that I was wrong, she was met by that sneakiest of all things..yes..I’m talking about..the dreaded open dresser drawer. It would also seem(and thanks to a tip from John, the owner of Sauble Dunes ..another great neighbourhood pub) she also is known as the only person to have ever broken the same wine glass…TWICE!(Thanks for that tip John).

Wavers in the Water Council

Posted by garym on March 31, 2004 - 1:20am

Two more pieces on the Echo website on the continuing saga of council's great soliloquy "To pipeline or not to pipeline, that is the question...

  • Council continues to wrestle tells the story of the March 22nd council, the calls for a referendum and for severing ties with Power Budd; Carl Noble cautioned that, like dogs, federal funding agents might smell 'fear' in any signs that people were actually thinking about what they would do with all that money.
  • Robbie Robinson calls for action, citing some referendum I'd never seen, but nonetheless Robbie thinks, as many pipers do, it's been enough of the thinking already, and that this is simply and purely a choice of sewers now or a cesspool damnation.

Hepworth Pipeline Meeting

Posted by garym on March 6, 2004 - 12:06am

I knew it was big as soon as I drove by the turn-off to the legion hall in Hepworth; I've lived here almost 9 years and I've never seen that parking lot so full the cars spilled out down that street and out to line a good 300 meters along either side of the county road to Sauble.

Official count put the crowd at 521 people who turned out to the unfunded and impromptu informational meeting to learn about and ask questions on the pipeline proposal being put through the council of the Town of South Bruce Peninsula. And some pretty amazing facts they were, even if you just keep to the facts.

I hardly know where to begin ...
