Internet
$18,939
Gary; I never realised that your ulterior motive for the Peninsular was to reach the ranks of Google and sell out :) This site http://www.smartpagerank.com/ gives the estimated present value as $18,939. I sure hope you'll remember all of the little people around here when the 6+ digit cheque comes.

VoIP Service Providers
Any existing suggestions or enough demand to bring in a new one? Does anybody have any recommendations for Sauble/Southampton local dialing termination providers. If not, how many people would be interested in having a Voip number in this area from one of the resellers. If there's enough demand, I'll approach a couple to see if anyone will provide termination for us. Why would we want it...good bye long distance. I basically want an extension of the business office up at the cottage but also to give local calling into my network from there and for family/friends long distance access.
I'm not looking for cable phone service or anything like that. This would be of benefit for anyone looking to put in their own voip pbx or like me, extend their office from outside the area.
Thanks

Free-software for Hotels
I wrote here some months ago about free-software options for restauranteurs, now here's an advanced online-booking and unit-management system for small to medium sized accommodations operators who are keen to get in on the boom in online booking without selling themselves out to the big chains. Solunas is a free community barn-raising of a website project by some German hoteliers; it tracks rooms, takes bookings, offers at-a-glance dislays and a host of other features, and it's 'free' because it is owned by everybody who helped build it -- pretty amazing what we can do when we co-operate, eh?

Do Your Taxes, For Free
Everyone likes a little break on their taxes, and thanks to SmartCanucks, here's a tax tip we can all appreciate: Why shell out your dollars (plus GST) on a store-bought income-tax calculator when you can just grab StudioTax for free?
I got an email from Cory and Deanna telling me that their certified Canadian Income tax program, StudioTax, is once again free this year. I tried StudioTax last year and I can confidently say that it's a very neat, practical tax program. Their claim is also true, the program is totally free.

How to make your pc act like a motion security camera
Wasn't sure to blog this or forum this, but it was so interesting an article and so relevant to us in SBP. Have you ever been away from your cottage, and been robbed..or ever been away from your home and wondering what is ripping open your garbage containers while you're away, or even wondering what or who has been making those large hand or footprints or paw prints..was it a bear..or was it sasquatch or was it Gary coming over to borrow some sugar for his tea?

PING: any mac users?
I know Irie Guy and Sabrinus are mac users, anyone else? I need a little input and suggestions. This is the scenario...( and I think by now everyone knows how I feel about windows and enjoy open source and Linux and my fav is still Unix..)my daughter is at college, and her course required a mac, so we got one of those dad gum newfangled white macbooks with the Intel Dual core processor..it came with macOsx(tiger), and a whole load of programs like garage band, etc.(I admit its a sweet machine, and love the built in camera and the quality..it feels good.)I set it up as follows in her dorm, macbook wireless bluetooth keyboard and mouse, usb epson c88 printer, a small plastic stand that allows for a 21 inch LCD screen, so she has a full workstation , and when she has class, unplug a cord or 2( had to order a mini dvi adapter through apple..noone stocked it..)and off goes the laptop to class.(Love the new laptops that allow them to work while closed!)
While it did come with microsoft office for mac, and I installed it, my(and hers!)leaning is still to open source, so on went open office.I also put on quite a few other open source software, Adium for connecting multiple I.M.'s,Transmission for torrent downloads,Audacity for sound recordings,of course GIMP( my fav rival to photoshop and paintshop in all operating systems)NVU(like dreamweaver for doing webpages),and Blender(for 3d modelling). Also msn for macs, and for downloading music Frostwire(available from frostwire.com for all O.S.'s) that uses the gnutella/limewire network with NO ads or baddies.

Sauble Beach on YouTube

Feeling a bit bored? Same old same old on the T.V. and radio? Well, now you can peruse video clips of Sauble Beach (amongst millions of other things) right on the web. Have a laugh at silliness, or reminisce about the 60's all for free with the click of your mouse.
(advisable not to do this on dial up......)

How to Build a better web site: Gary got me!
While perusing and googling for sources on wiarton UFO's somehow, Gary's blog was listed, with a very interesting title to it.Its an oldie, and a goodie, and with just a few simple words:
"Finally, revealed for all to see (for those who have the Flash)...."
I was on the hook being reeled in.I know what criteria( and I agree) that Gary likes, and flash is kind of stored over there in the corner with the spittoon-------->
But why is he calling this how to build a great website, and using the term flash in the same sentence..well..read it here , follow the instructions(when he says to follow the link, its the bottom link and not the email link....
and yes...I am number 16....................
Google ads ad-aware to its google pack
Well, this is an interesting little piece I overlooked a few weeks ago.Google has been quite a few things lately, most of it positive, mind you if you read Gary's piece there was a little bit of disappointment in what could have been.
Google has combined ad-aware in their "Google Pack" , which is a positive thing.I have tested various adware/malware spy removal programs..and usually every so often one swims ahead, spy bot search and destroy, then ad aware, Microsofts(which is a bit ironic since they allowed it in the first place) but always come back to ad-aware, especially with the latest release.
This is a MUST have for windows users, it will make your internet experience more enjoyable, if you insist on using windows..(or have to).
Combined with this in google pack is Adobe reader(for reading pdf files)Firefox with google toolbar, gallery player wallpaper, google desktop, google earth, google pack screensaver, google talk, google tool bar for internet explorer(stop those popups)Norton anti virus, picasa, real player and trillian.
Now.. I M H O these are all fine programs..but I find norton very bloated and memory intensive..and it is only a 6 month free, whereas I use AVG free edition and find it terrific for when I use windows, and did I mention its free?
Also I am not usually thrilled with real player, most of us who have been around these machines for awhile remember what real player used to do to windows..it would basically take over, the new one lets you customize to perhaps associate it with only .ram files if you wish.
