UR Grey Bruce

Posted by garym on October 12, 2007 - 9:44am

I'm probably just the last one to know -- it's what I get for never reading newspapers -- but I stumbled into this off a sidebar on the Sun-Times site this morning, and man, there's some really good stuff in that stream ...

Get involved by joining one of our Blogs. These public message boards allow you to share your ideas, opinions, and concerns, while receiving feedback from other local community members. This is where your two cents really matters.

Shoreline Beacon: No News is Best

Posted by garym on December 8, 2005 - 3:35pm

Just got off the phone from a lengthy and tense conversation with an editor at the Shoreline Beacon, and a stern, stern no if's cease and desist order condemning this site for copyright infringment bootlegging "complete stories" from their publication. Complete stories? Say it's not true. I know people have quoted them, but full posting plagerism? Can she give me an example?

"$5 parking at the hospitals"

... say what? We have no such story. Nothing in my log of posts ... What's going on here? So I ask Google and sure enough there be the culprit!

What was it she was so huffed in legal arms about? Google and Yahool Search Result RSS feeds! ...

Jam Juice

Posted by garym on August 14, 2004 - 10:41am

Oh yeah, who da man? -- before I get any farther, a big hearty hi and howareya c'mon in upper Bruce County welcome to all fans of the bands headed over t'other side of the Sound for Great Lakes Jam ... and to give you all what you've come for, the link you really want is over there in the sidebar

but that's not the story. the story is how you ended up here, way out here in wild limestone and dune lands of the South Bruce Peninsulars.

I expect most of the fest crowd will end up here, in need of a burst of civilization from the mud and muddle of what's shaping up to be a massive pop fest, you'll need camping gear, so you have to make the pilgrimage to Hepworth's Suntrails, and you'll need a double latte at least that will lure you out Sauble way to Amici or Mama's and the cheesecake at the Driftwood is to die for.

Did I mention we had a beach?

But that's not the story here. The story here is how our lowly and completely unfunded and 100% volunteer community self-authored storyboard site is the number two ranking Yahoo! hit for the Great Lakes Jam.

Posted by a tourist on May 16, 2004 - 11:00am

Thought I'd post an online congrats to our very own Gary for his apperance on the Wired Magazine site in an article about RSS readers! You can find the article right here.
It made me chuckle when I read the quote

"Once all the covered wagons show up and an RSS reader is folded into Microsoft's Internet Explorer or Outlook, we're doomed," Murphy said. "

Way to go Gary!

A Year of Our Stories

Posted by garym on April 13, 2004 - 1:38am

Time sure flies when you're having fun: One year ago today The South Bruce Peninsular burst on to the web scene, a humble little website portal proclaiming itself a bold new experiment in collaborative community journalism ...

"It’s the voice of all of us, the second superpower, the voice of people online and involved in their community. It’s the voice of a free press that publishes itself, just as it is."

And thanks to all of you, it seems to be working ...

CyberSaver: Echo's Box Ads

Posted by garym on February 9, 2004 - 11:11pm

An accidental find today of a little known service out of the Wiarton Echo and it's family of community newspapers: CyberSaver appears to be a very simple archive for bitmap scans of the box ads currently appearing in the paper. You can't cut-and-paste the copy, but the collection is categorized by advertiser type and each scan is tagged and searchable by the name and contact information for the sponsor company.

And it's full of interesting tidbits, notices on Bruce County roads-hearings, business listings, WDHS fundraisers, church events ...

TheStar: Willie will be News

Posted by garym on January 30, 2004 - 3:21pm

Down at Groundhog Central today the talk was on the weather, and whether or not the city-folk media will be Canadian enough to brave the forecasts to make the trek up to Wiarton this Monday. According to the Toronto Star, the senior climatologist for Environment Canada also has his doubts about any early spring prospects and has already booked a two-week Florida vacation. Dave Phillips adds that Wiarton Willie will be the most anticipated groundhog in years ...

"He's going to bump everybody off the front pages, whether it's the PM or the Pope ... People will be grasping for any little utterance that he has. If he sees his shadow, 'Oh, my, God,' there will be six more weeks of winter. People will be praying for him not to see his shadow."
