Kudos

Posted by Dan O. on August 2, 2007 - 5:40pm

One of our regular contributors is highlighted in the latest Wiarton Echo. We may all disagree on many things but I have to take my hat off to his/her work in helping make SBP a better place.

Over the past 55 years of the annual running of the Wiarton Shore to Shore Road Race there have been six volunteer race directors who have kept it going.
They are Fred and Jean Gilbert, Beth Moore, Margo Morgan, and Patricia Symon, all of Wiarton, Hank Nuis, Stokes Bay and the Wiarton Rotary Club. All six will be honored for their dedication at a tribute shortly after the finish of the race on Civic Holiday, Monday, August 6 in the Upstairs Room of the Wiarton Arena.

Oliphant Fen - Changes to Shoreline Ave.

Posted by CL1368 on March 1, 2007 - 5:42pm

I noted at the most recent package from Town Council, that Ms Walden from Oliphant sent an email to the town asking about the proposed changes to Shoreline Ave. She's concerned about the Fen. The Ontario Field Naturalists have put alot of work into this Fen and as far as I'm concerned it is sacred ground now. Anyone else concerned about this? Council have asked Staff to respond to this lady saying that they have had engineers design the road and to the minimum standards for roads in the municipality.
What is really going to happen on this road?
What is the effect it is going to have on the Fen?
Do we protect our wetlands or do we straighten out the road so cars can go faster?
And as far as the minimum standard of roads......have you seen Sunset Drive?

Water infrastructure improvements

Posted by garym on April 28, 2005 - 10:03am

Some new currents in the municipal water works in and around Sauble Beach as announced by Industry Canada last month. Improvements will reach about 1500 households with $8.5M in upgrades to bring the municipal system up to spec with the Ontario Drinking Water Systems Regulation, with the costs split more or less equally between the Feds, the Province and the Municipality, funding approval pending environmental assessment.

The Town will upgrade three water works and combine nine systems into two, resulting in five upgraded water systems. Improvements to the Oliphant and Amabel-Sauble systems will include a new well, upgrades to existing wells, a new treatment building and ultraviolet disinfection equipment. The Foreman and Huron Woods systems will both be equipped with alarmed on-line analyzers, standby sodium hypochlorite tanks, chemically assisted filtration and ultraviolet disinfection equipment. The fifth water system, the Wiarton Water Treatment Plant, will be upgraded with ultraviolet disinfection equipment and waste piping filtration.

BREAKFAST CLUB IMPORTANT (ONGOING)

Posted by Bob on March 29, 2005 - 2:51pm

Hi I am responding to this mornings post re Green horn looking for food donations.

My family and I want to thank Amable sauble,Breakfast,Green horn and all locals fortheir much needed contributions.

We do have hungre residents locally.

My family for an example use the donated lunch program at amable sauble and the breakfast club.

We have lived here for 2 yrs. My wife is an R.P.N. .she transfered her job from Mississauga to V.O.N. Grey Bruce. after only 9 mos was downsized from them.

Myself I am an educated paralegal who cannot find local work  so I am cooking with a local restaurant. I am gratefull for the wpork but it does not give us enough to buy groceries.

Thanks to all the helpfull people we are able  to manage.

Unless you are tecnically unimployed  a family cannot get a ticket to go to the food bank.

We saw a good service in Wwiarton' the I G A  there prepacks food bags for the local salvation army food bank We donate to that when we get a good pay day

I think one day if everyone donated one dollar to everytime they purchase groceries to local food bank no one would go hungry.

It is a wonderfull comunity to live in. Unless you are semi retired or retired .It seems the job market is for seniors and does not help 40 to 60 yr olds attract employment.

Bob and family. thanks from the bottom of my heart.

A Nurse willing to count, not deployed

Posted by Laurie watkins on February 8, 2005 - 5:26pm

would like to take this opportunity to thank you

for volunteering to assist with relief efforts in Southeast Asia following the Tsunami on December 26, 2004.  Nurses in Ontario volunteered in large numbers

and we are proud of their commitment to the

humanitarian efforts in other parts of the world.

In discussions with the federal government,

aid agencies and Ontario experts who have

recently returned from Southeast Asia, it has

been determined that at this time, the services

The Wildman of Oliphant

Posted by garym on January 19, 2005 - 2:22am

On a dare from The Echo, we take a trip out along The Rowdies to where Paul Kastner has a few haunting tales to tell from the shores of Wildman Island ...

"... after his death, the mystery surrounding the Wildman of Oliphant took on further dimensions when new owners of the island came across an alarming inscription carved into a birch tree. There it remains today, a tantalizing message of nearly a century and a quarter ago. Does it reveal who the Wildman was, and why he sought escape? Perhaps ..."

"Hello to All VIANurses

I want to thank you for your commitment to volunteering your services in
cases of emergency. I would like to remind you all at this time, to make
sure that you have indicated your willingness to be deployed for the
tsunami effort in your VIANurse profile if that is your wish to do so.
Some new VIANurses have saved their profile but have not indicated
"tsunami relief" but have sent me correspondence of the wish to assist in
this disaster.

You can update your VIANurse registration by logging into your VIANurse
account at the RNAO web site. The link w will take you to the VIANurse elief.

Currently the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care has asked RNAO to
compile this list if there is a need to deploy nurses to the devastated
regions of Asia. There has been no active call for deployment and no
suggestion of time-lines for deployment as of yet. I will keep you updated
as information comes in.

I would like to at this time, and on behalf of RNAO, convey my sincerest
gratitude to all of you that are willing to be available to help others in
crisis. This is clearly an indication of the professionalism and
humanitarianism of our profession.

Best Regards,

A nurse willing to count!

Posted by Laurie watkins on January 6, 2005 - 9:32pm

I woke up today and formulated the beginnings of a poem to share.

A Nurse  willing to count!

I woke up this morning feeling sad for the flood victims.

Oh what a tragic loss ,not a moment to know what hit them.

I walk about freely in my Oliphant  heaven,

Not a moment to know  it was coming closer amen.

My family intact and 6 siblings galor,

thay have no one not any more.

I became sad and waking knowing I am warm.

My neighbours over seas  with so much harm.

It could be our out town, undiscovered Oliphant.

No it hit them so many inocent.

My prayers stay strong .they only have Haunt.

Beach Alive

Posted by garym on April 8, 2004 - 11:55pm

It's the Easter Weekend, and just like the blooming of the purple crocus, that means the beach is coming alive as the first cottagers come back to Sauble. From driving around the village today, some events of note happening over the holiday:

  • Sandy Bay is sponsoring a children's Easter Egg Hunt, according to a small hand-made sign posted at the corner of the Parkway and the Oliphant road. I didn't get all the details as I rounded the corner, but it's happening Sunday at Allan's.
  • Mama's Coffee Shop (new owners of the old Baker Bob's shop) will be open for breakfast Friday morning at 7am; if you've been missing your espresso and pastry fix all winter, your wait is over!
  • Also opening for breakfast, Lobbies Restaurant down on the lakefront. No word yet if that includes their famous pizza (and why not!)

If you've noticed any more, feel free to post a comment and let us know or send us an email and we'll post it for you.

New Observatory for Wiarton

Posted by garym on November 11, 2003 - 10:23am

The Wiarton/Oliphant Outdoor Education Centre is to be the new home for the Dr. Herb Coleman telescope and observatory dome. Final details are yet to be finalized but the Bruce County Astronomical Society reports a verbal commitment from the Saugeen District School Board (the owner of this equipment) and the OEC. The BCAS has volunteered the labour.

Anyone interested in offering assistance or voicing concerns is invited to contact Richard J. at the BCAS.
