The Arran Lake Outlaw

Our very own wild west outlaw? From Arran Lake? It is true….sort of. This is the tale of Ellen Watson, born at Arran Lake, and moved to Wyoming to become known as Cattle Kate, where she became part of the infamous Johnson County War of 1892. Cattle barons pitted against farmers and landowners .
At first she was thought of as an outlaw, hung by vigilantes with her husband from the limb of a tree for rustling, but it seems that new evidence may contradict this.

"Witnesses were murdered or disappeared mysteriously or were bought off. The three Cheyenne papers, dominated by incredibly wealthy cattle interests, trumped up the ridiculous stories everyone knows today about Ellen being dirty and rustler, and Jim her accomplice, pimp and murderous paramour.

Another stop on our tour of S.B.P.,

Allenford , originally known as Driftwood Crossing.(this was from a 1905 publication, although some reports state flood wood crossing)Named after James Allen(originally from Ireland) who settled the area in 1857.Allen was also the first reeve of combined Amabel and Albermarle township. Its located on Highway 21, on the former road known as the Gimby trail, named after the man who kept the road from Southampton to Owen Sound clear. While the once busy railway is long gone, Allenford still boasts some booming businesses, both old and new, and some renowned people. How about being a site for a 180th family reunion? Or a local Mary Gowan that has done very very well, I guess good roots mean a great future:)I wonder if she is related to another Gowan that won a medal in the 1800’s for helping Canada resist the Fenians

Allenford is also home to a music studio, which has been covered before in the secret life of allenford.Of course no tour of Allenford would be complete without mentioning the Allenford Powow So next time when you drive past the ballpark, and by Aikens century old hardware store..take a look around and try and find the old school..and where the once thriving railway station was, look at the beautiful winding river, and if you really really feel up to it..maybe do some searching to get a reward.Next stop Skipness and Park Head.

Some may scoff at the village of Allenford for being small and out of the beaten path, but if you think there's nothing there, you're sadly mistaken. For one thing, it may be small, but it has it's own Entertainment Source website listing all the local eateries, cottages and campgrounds.

Size isn't everything.
