do you have a blog?

Posted by bub on February 19, 2005 - 12:36am

Really, do you have some thoughts to share, on anything? Do you have your own somewhere?Last February when I and Gary were in the chatbox, and I mentioned I was playing around with blogspot( a free online blog ) He said to me, " you know you already have a blog, its right here on SBP".Talk about a good welcome, it was like a family member opened the door and yelled come on in for a coffee! He was right, I could use a blog for business, or ideas or something. But I like this feeling of community, its like a breath of fresh air.He doesnt get upset at any typos or mistakes, it can all be corrected. No damage done. Its what this is all about. Here and now, us and everyone.Come on...give it a try, what do you want to blog about?
p.s. you can even point out my typos....umm did I spell February correct?

Advertising on the SBP

Posted by garym on April 25, 2004 - 8:56am

How can I advertise on the South Bruce Peninsular?

Good question, and a frequent question, and the short answer is our SBP does accept advertising, and it is affordable and effective.

SBP is a banner-free zone

You may notice that our SBP doesn't cram every page with graphic advertisements -- the truth is, graphic advertisements just don't work, they have a horrible clickthrough rate and the eye-tracking surveys tell us that people are very adept at ignoring irrelevent imagery on a webpage as they focus on what they came for, the text.

As a service to our advertisers, we don't run banner ads, and I feel sorry for those who may have spent good money on such ads on other websites. It doesn't work, folks, bottom line.

text rules

What does work is a simple string of text; people are drawn to text. Once we learn to read, it's virtually impossible to not read any words in our visual field.

For this reason, we chose to run our advertising through the Google Ads Network -- using GoogleAds, you bid on certain keywords and pay by the clickthrough, and you can pay as much or as little as you wish; ad rates start from about $0.05 with minimum orders of about $5, and that's advertising everyone can afford.

And it gets better: When you buy google ads, you are not just placing advertising on our website, you are also buying ad-rotation space on all other GoogleAd partners.

Chatbox Troubles in Microsoft Explorer

Posted by garym on March 7, 2004 - 10:02pm

Several people have reported problems using the "chatbox":/chatbox with the latest versions of Microsoft Explorer -- the chatbox shows a blank page for the script of the conversation and repeated tells them they are leaving and entering the chat.

the problem is MSIE default security settings

I don't use MSIE myself, so maybe someone can confirm or explain better, but this is apparently a problem with the _default_ settings for the Security Options under the MSIE preferences, and I've been told that you can get the chatbox to work if you set your security level to Medium-Low ... or was it medium-rare ...

The chatbox works by refreshing the conversation pane every 10 seconds, and MSIE default security does not allow for automatic refreshing of pages --- they allow you to download and install a mafia-sponsored virus, but they don't allow you to watch a page that needs to reload fresh content ... go figure.

Meet me on the beach ... in February?

Posted by garym on January 31, 2004 - 2:56am

It's cold out there, it's white-out dark, the wind is howling, the snow flanking the walkway is waist-high, you ain't going anywhere and there's a knock, knock, knock ...

Heya Gary!

No, it wasn't the neighbours being neighbourly through the frost and snow come tapping at my screen door for a cuppa coffee. Those were the words I saw flash in the 1:34am left-margin chatbox while I doing some cleanup work on this newly revamped Peninsular website --- it was Bub, who just happened to be online and on this very page right when I had only just switched on the chat-box.

hookup on the SBP

The chatbox is like the old counter at Baker Bob's, it's there, everyone is welcome, just drop by and join in. The chatbox is like a slow-teletype where SBP members can yak about whatever, anytime, 7×24, chat never sleeps.

it's free, it's easy --- current Peninsular members may need to Edit their account (there's lots of other neat stuff in there anyway), everyone else just needs to sign up on the SBP (Mozilla users will need to let SBP do popups; it's the only one, we promise!)

Maybe you like cabin-fever season, but you can either talk to a green tennis ball named Wilson or you can talk to another South Bruce Peninsular.

Minus Twenty-Six

Posted by garym on January 10, 2004 - 8:48am

A beautiful clear-skies three-fifths full-moon morning and the mercury says it's minus twenty-six degrees celsius --- that's about -14F for our friends to the south and right crispy cold enough in any language!

I notice the Weather Channel webpage doesn't give the effective wind-chill temperature -- they probably don't want to induce any mass panic --- but they do say today's high will be a balmy -19C and that this will have an 'effective' temperature a few degrees warmer than the current actual temperature ...

bundle up warm if you're headed out today -- I hear the golf course has their outdoor rink happening, but anyone with any actual sense will likely be hibernating ... although, crisp and crackly as it may be out there today, so far as driving about is concerned, and once you get the ice-rock out of the wheel-wells, this is a far sight easier to live with than the week of white-out blizzardry it replaced ...

my guess is winter has finally come to the beach.

Predicting the Ontario Elections

Posted by garym on September 7, 2003 - 9:36am

Wafting undecided in the path of Election 2003? The Election Prediction Project may be some bits of help in telling the candidates apart:

Election Prediction Project started as part of the honour thesis research of Milton Chan, founder of the initiative. It attempted to predict the outcome of the 1999 Ontario Provincial Election, with moderate success. The project was initially hosted by the Political Science Department of University of Waterloo. Since then, Milton has finished his schooling in University of Waterloo, and the Project has grown from an individual's research work to a group effort.

Personally, I advocate everyone pick one unlikely underdog without a snowball's chance -- Bill will still win, but maybe if every last one of the missing PC/Liberal votes goes off in the same direction, it might send some messages ...
