Sandhill Crane
Posted by garym on April 20, 2004 - 2:33pm
Maybe some birders out there can help me out here, because all I know is the crane we saw flying low across the fields beside the Sauble River was huge.
Hard to tell from the car; just around sunset yesterday, we were headed along the Spring Creek road between Sauble and Hepworth, just past Sideroad 15 (near the Lawrence barn) when I spotted a white crane headed west along the river. It looked white from head to foot with just some black trim on the trailing edges of the wings, and it could have easily been 1.5m tall.
Anyone else see this bird? Anyone know what it was? The references online for the Sandhill Crane put that bird in this area and at that size, but say it should be a sandy brown.
