Got Jobs?
Just a reminder, in case you've got spare tasks here and there, there's today even more folks out there waking up to community un-engagement. In this latest round of "loosing the ballast", it is nearly a fifth of the Owen Sound plant -- GM may not know this, but we do: The secret of a happy and productive society is having a gainfully engaged and 100% involved membership :)
Tenneco Canada Inc. workers learned Monday the company will lay off 104 of its 524 workers in September as part of a permanent staff reduction at the plant. It says the move is a direct result of GM cuts announced last month.
The facility assembles shocks for a range of GM small pickups and SUVs. The vast majority of the layoffs are manufacturing jobs.

I read once somewhere of how some of the Pharoahs had commissioned the pyramids not for self-aggrandizement, but because drought had left them with a problem of mass unemployment. Smart folks them Kehmet, no wonder they lasted so many centuries. That story was known to FDR too. A happy Canada is a working Canada, and if we were smart too, we'd consider the discharging of human ballast without firm and comprehensive repurposing plans to be a civil crime.

Had a weird dream
In this dream the SBP Council contacted Tenneco and offered to put all 104 people to work building our new town square like a barn-raising, paying next to nothing in cash, but treating them like honoured guests with great food, local accommodations, family beach bbq and heaps of sunshine, thanks and good cheer in hopes we could cushion the crush of their job loss and maybe aid them to do some now-needed social networking while feeling useful crafting a needed civic commons in a landmark event that would live in the hearts and minds of tourists and Saublites alike for generations.
but then I woke up.
