Thank you Mayor
A big thank you to the mayor and all involved (including the posters here on sbp and the original source) for finally bringing what we have talked about for ages here. And may I state what I have said before..check the US and Canadian Gov't websites Chlorine Dioxide is a registered pesticide..how do YOU feel about being a guinea pig?
"South Bruce Peninsula Mayor Gwen Gilbert and Grey-Bruce-Owen Sound MP Larry Miller are promising to raise questions about an eight-year-old, University of Toronto drinking water experiment in Wiarton.
The mayor was reacting to a federal court ruling that National Sciences and Engineering Research Council officials did not have to order an investigation into questions about research involving chlorine dioxide in drinking water in Wiarton. Both she and Miller expect to work “to get some accountability,” Gilbert said.
The Canadian Federation of Students launched a lawsuit against the federal research council after a graduate student alleged that final reports about the experiment omitted significant details about complaints from Wiarton residents.
University of Toronto researchers and chemical producer ERCO Worldwide had conducted the experiment in the summer of 2000 to test the usefulness of chlorine dioxide instead of chlorine as a disinfectant. Gilbert was among those who noticed laundry damage during the experiment and complained about it at the time.
“As far as I’m concerned, we need to press for some answers,” Gilbert said Friday. “The greatest concern is they did a final report and it was not complete. There was no indication in the report that there were concerns from the citizens.”
Miller issued a statement Friday expressing his disappointment with the decision. There should be greater accountability for publicly funded research, he said.
“It is only common sense that if public money funds experiments in our communities, then the public needs to know all of the results. Unfortunately, this was not the case in Wiarton,” Miller said.
t the time of the experiment, Gilbert was among residents who complained of bleach-like stains on clothing. Others complained of illness in pets, the water’s taste and odor.
In 2000, her late husband was a member of municipal council. Not only did Gwen notice laundry problems, she was fielding calls from others.
“My phone was ringing from citizens that had concerns,” she said Friday.
'
Federal Court Justice John A. O’Keefe ruled recently that the federal funding agency did not directly fund the Wiarton experiment and was not compelled to order an investigation.
Chris Radziminski, the student whose complaints led to the lawsuit, and students’ federation executive member Angela Regnier both indicated dissatisfaction with the judge’s ruling in interviews with The Sun Times.
Canada seems to have “no watchdog organization to intervene when substantial allegations in corporate interference in university research are uncovered,” Regnier said.'
and you know who Chris came to first and forefront with his concerns ... thank you Chris.
And thank you Gary..again..but for "open source blogs" ...who knows...
