Eat your veggies
Kids won't eat their veggies? Science comes to our rescue, and it turns out the best solution was no farther than our own backyards ...
"It was a simple, clear finding," said Debra Haire-Joshu, director of the university's Obesity Prevention Center and a study author. "Whether a food is homegrown makes a difference. Garden produce creates what we call a positive food environment."
"When children are involved with growing and cooking food, it improves their diet"

Which certainly jibes with all those times my mom would say, "Don't put that in your mouth; you don't know where its been."

play with your food
Years ago, I not only had my kids involved in gardening, but the neighbourhood children would come and join in as well.Showing them how to garden, and how to thin out plants, and not to be afraid of the worms or garter snakes, was as much fun for them as for me.The looks on their faces when they would thin out carrots, and rinse and eat the tiny ones on the spot, was terrific.
I also showed them non traditional ways of gardening, for instance, that half wooden barrel, wasn't planted with flowers, it was bushy feathery tops of the carrots that grew straight underneath. The other barrels had lettuce with a cucumber climbers, or the teepee the kids made out of bamboo poles and had climbing sugar snap peas growing up into their secret clubhouse/shady spot(they would sit inside and eat the sweet raw pods) , and vegetables were mixed in with flowers and bushes, garlic kept the bugs away from the roses.
I think every one should have kids involved like this, and get them away from the nintendo for at least a bit.
And you get to play with bugs :)

I knew a bunch of kids who were quit passionate about gardening. They were always talking about when they were going gardening again and hoe exciting it was that the garden looked good and so on... and then one fall day I saw this helicopter flying around real low and the kids din't really want to talk about thier garden anymore. In fact I haven't seen them around for a while?????But I do know some kids like to garden so there is hope.
Our own garden
The boys are very eager to grow their own gardens this year. So, I actually got a head start and had some seedlings ready to put in the soil after this weekend.
This is the first time I have been able to get all three raised beds ready for planting. Thank you, boys.
Gary and Riordain decided that they were going to grow some rabbit food. They started cabbage and carrot seeds a couple of night ago.
