For those who missed it, this is a weekend to mark in your calendar for next year as the Day of the Duck ... also known as the Sauble Beach Lions' annual Rubber Duck Race fundraiser.

Down at the falls, the inimitable Sauble Lions tip a front-end loader full of rubber duckies into the top of the falls, then hurd them down the rapids to funnel down to the finish gate. The race runs in three heats, first place in each claiming a cool $500, with $2700 in prizes in all.

The other thing you need to know about the Duck Race is that it's popular -- this year's tickets sold out quickly, almost a full week before the first heat, and for $2-a-duck, it's pretty easy to see why.

So did we win? Well ... yes and no. Maybe our two ducks didn't come in ahead of the rest, but all money raised goes to support local Lions charities and projects, and so win or lose at the finish line, we all win in the long run.

The next major Lions event: Labour Day Sunday Road Toll, all day at the south hill in Wiarton.
