The Longest Sandfest

Posted by garym on August 6, 2005 - 11:12pm

The Sauble Lions' Street Dance, Huron Feathers' ice-cream, watermelon, licorice and tricycle races (10th year!) plus the Sauble Daycare Baby Pageant (31st year!!) and your best chance to dunk Mark Wunderlich ...

and, of course, acres of amazing sand sculptures.

This year, Sauble Sandfest was not only a whole day of of beach-fun, but stretching all the full 14K from south Saugeen across into South Bruce Peninsula up to the North Beach, this is not only a unique cross-cultural beach party, but Sandfest also has to be one of the geographically longest beach festivals in the world!

Hands across the water

I like this new twin-nation twist, and here's hoping Sauble and Saugeen will continue to work together on this idea because it is totally unique and captures an intrisically special character of our shared-beach situation. I was saying to May not more than a day before how special it would be if the festival organizers could leverage our border with the Saugeen Nation, show some spunk and initiative in international relations even if only in some small ways, like maybe, instead of the main-stay fare of burgers and fries, the Sandfest could sport real Indian tacos, or corn soup and scones ...

and there they were, big as life! Right on.

I realize Sandfest happens in the peak of Powwow Season (Cape Croker Powwow is on the 20th) but here's hoping there's still a few resources that can join with those food and craft vendors who took the time to set-up shop for Sandfest. Like I said, it's special and a partnership that could only happen here, and I'm glad it finally did.
