Mays comments here are true.Lets start passing around a few ideas to get a future going..and growing for the kids.Big industries are obviously a no go, so lets narrow it down to tourism(which we have) and other ideas.I will start with technology both high end and low end. Technology is the future, and yes I know been said again and again, but things change so fast, its how we are able to adapt that counts.Working from home, is now becoming more widespread, you can work IN Toronto..but be in Sauble.
Education, that’s a subject. There are online universities that you can access and get educated from home..and believe me..I work at a University..it is the future of education.
But one thing I’d like to point out..is skills.Whether taught at college or through apprenticeships, that is in demand..and the money is great. We should be encouraging more children to go this route.
It can be done..without changing Sauble into Wasaga Beach.Take a trip there sometime in the summer, you’ll see what I mean.
Hey, Port Elgin has Pumpkin Fest…lets start something as big.
Oh…and lets try and keep the town looking classy, somewhat rustic..not gaudy and cheesy..oh..take a trip to Niagara Falls and see Clifton Hill , you’ll know what I mean.

Oh so many thoughts. How about adding more computers to the library, and upgrading it to high speed connection.Looking into federal grants that help for this.I read that chamber of commerce wants to look into having paid parking at the beach..not a new idea..but it could be a novel idea..instead of meters, have a day pass for 5 bucks..and a year pass for 25.Money to go to childrens food fund, cleaning of the beach and washrooms and the library.Right now the Studebaker club of Ontario has a meet in Owen Sound, and afterward they come up to my neighbours cottage and spend the night. How about a *classic Car weekend* a la Port Dovers bike week.
oh..so many thoughts..so little sleep..
come on..add your ideas. Its what a blog is all about.Don't be shy.

My 2 cents on boosting tourism

I moved from one tourist town(in Hongkong) to another(in Ontario) 9 years ago. A common attitude between the two which helps kill the community is that businesses are more interested in taking money from the tourists(does not necessarily mean that they like the tourists) than serving the community. So, I am not really keen on further developing tourism, unless we break out of the existing model and create something locals can and want to partake.

One of the things I want to see happen is someone bringing back the old bowling alley. A senior friend of mine had worked at the bowling alley for 30 somewhat years until it was sold to another owner who turned it into another beach souvenir shop. Whenever we get together, she will tell me what the beach used to be like when her children, now in their late 40s and early 50s, were growing up. Young people then had places to go and things to do. When we moved here in 1995, all that's left for them was an arcade at the corner where main street meets the beach. A couple of years ago, that too was turned into another clothing store.
