Who can save our school?

Amabel-Sauble Community School is a very unique school. It was built under the joint effort of the Bruce County Board of Education and Amabel Township. It truely is a "community" school with the 2 partners sharing the responsibility of its maintenance and upkeeping, as well as the privilage of utilizing the space in the premises. A recent accommodation report of the school recommends closure as one possible solution to reduce the Board's deficits. A long conversation with the Board has led to the discovery that the core problem lies with a $41,000 yearly consumption in operation cost which is, according to the Board, supposedly the responsibility of the community.

The Town, although all supportive of keeping the school, is satisfied with the current situation where it only pays for all outside maintenance of the school, totaling $7,000 yearly. That, according to the agreement signed by the Board and the Town when the school was built, is to be the only obligation required of the latter in terms of cost sharing

Further talks with the Board revealed that Amabel-Sauble Childcare Center, which shares an exclusive portion of the school building, is considered as the "major debtor". The Board continously signs agreement with the childcare center on leasing them the space at less than 40% of the estimated rate. The negotiation processes have been smooth as the Board has never demanded a higher rental.

The Board have given the SCC(School Community Council) the impression that it is it's responisbility to come up with ways of generating $41,000 annually to resovle the crisis situation which was created because of the Board's generosity(and stupidity). Shouldn't it be time the Board acted responsibly and started negotiating with the Town and/or the childcare center themselves?
