Fireworks out of control

Posted by Hew Jass on July 25, 2008 - 11:27pm

How do we put a stop to all of this noise and commotion? All through every single night the skies at Sauble are filled with Fireworks. The bylaw police are quick to put the stop to little doggies on the beach but cannot be found when fireworks fly carelessly into the forests and cottage rooves around Sauble. Do we need a major fire or tragedy to be the catalyst to bring this problem under control? I have seen children lighting these light cannons and I have seen them aimed towards cottages and forested areas. Am I the only one agitated at this?

Bam Bam Boom

I can't say I'm agitated by it, not nearly as much as I'm agitated by disturbing trends in other issues, but then, the fireworks I hear are a great deal distant -- not so distant that I didn't first wonder if they were firearms until I listened more carefully. Nonetheless, you have a good point: Why is there one law for dogs, and yet a different law for fireworks, and a third for those who dump coals.

bylaws

garym, we have so many bylaws but no one to enforce them. septic bylaw comes to mind first. why isn't the town vigorously enforcing our bylaws?

Councillor Kerr Stalled Edited Fireworks Bylaw

This was seconded by Mark Wunderlich and took place July 14. The bylaw was in effect, it had been working and charges had been laid but a minor issue with the wording meant it could not be "short formed" The wording was corrected and in a minor formality the law was to be read three times and would replace the previous version.

On the third reading Dan Kerr tabled it and Mark Wunderlich seconded. Ana Vukovic tried to speak agaist the motion to table but was blocked. Council will need to get this back on the books ASAP as the residents near the beach are being harrassed by nightly explosions and now an unreasonable delay.

We will need help from all members of council to get this passed without any more delays.

DEFUNCT FIREWORKS BYLAW

Wondered why we were being treated to such regular fireworks bangs, having read the Fireworks Bylaw on SBP town website. Thought it was because bylaw officers were not available during evenings. Was there any public news of this Kerr/Wunderlich blockade of amended bylaw -- such as coverage in Wiarton News or OS Suntimes?

Sat July 25th someone with a large supply of firecrackers (the type which are interwoven and you light one wick to explode the entire pack) was out near Sixth Street washrooms between 10:15 pm and 11:30 pm. They also were exploding fireworks which travelled high into the skies. One would have thought it was 4th of July all over again!

The good thing is that we are not in one of the dry years this summer so far. However grasses and trees dry out quickly in sunshine with only sand in which to grow.

Perhaps this is part of Business Plan to increase tourism? We are coming up on the biggest long weekend of the summer, August 1st-4th, and it is disconcerting to find out that our long-awaited Fireworks Bylaw is now kaput!!!

Call your respective councillor and voice your opinion on this "missing" bylaw problem. The Boys have been at it again!!

Despite paying lip service to environmental issues, blue flags, etc., as always it is evident that our local business groups are only interested in how many thousands of persons they can pack into Sauble Beach on weekends. I guess they also want to sell those fireworks which we see advertised in so many locations locally.

Fireworks Bylaw Passed

Council has passed this bylaw and it is now in force. Enforcement can be by bylaw officer or OPP.

Call the OPP if you do not wish to leave your name this is a problem with the Town's bylaw enforcement that has been brought to my attention. Some people do not trust the confidentiality of the bylaw dept.

All firecraker "noise" types are prohibited at all times. Family fireworks are allowed six days per year and these do not include explosive types. Merchants must post signs and follow display code requirements. No fireworks may be set off within 600 feet of any gasoline storage and that pretty much includes all private property. That should help reduce the noise and fire hazard.

It is not hard to find the source but some calls will focus attention on the problem. Last night when I pulled my boat out in Wiarton at 10 pm there were serious fireworks going off in the area. You would think the OPP would be on the job as you could almost predict the occurence but not a sign so a little focus will be required.
