Wayne, this is hilarious; far from offending the young ears around me, my reflex reaction was only to nearly swallow my uppers! For the folks who'd been busy ignoring US Football, here's the outcome of the media story in a nutshell:

which is to say "OOPSIES ..." and some fast acting spin control over the Council's brilliant decision to drop the Shinerama because they errantly believed an unreliable source who claimed CF only affects white men, which in itself reeks of the sort of pseudo-science nonesense I get in my Inbox almost daily. The real story on CF is remarkably unlike the hearsay that 'informed' their Council; the real story goes more like this:

It is correct to say that cystic fibrosis "does affect Caucasian populations primarily," according to Cathleen Morrison, CEO of the CCFF.

However, the term 'Caucasian' includes people from South Asia, North Africa, the Persian Gulf and Israel.

"These are Caucasian populations, These people do not have white skin. They have CF, it now seems, in the same ratios as other Caucasian people who do have white skin."

Cystic fibrosis, which is the most common genetic fatal disease in young people in Canada, affects just as many young girls as boys, Morrison added.

And this little tidbit maybe tells us the real news of this news story, and the news that we can take home to the SBP and use here at home:

Put in context, this means they can get themselves accepted into the smug spot of a deciding Council Vote for a major First-World university and still not have the barest clue about even everyday ordinary and well-documented things, like Shinerama, CF and Caucasians, but not have the least reservation on boldly expressing a professed expertise that will decide the fate of other humans. A single uninformed hearsay is, well, good enough, and off they go, not half-cocked, but barely cocked at all. As Count Floyd might have said, "Pretty scary stuff, boys and girls."

Normally, y'know, it's customary, when condemning a prisoner, to at least fake some evidence against them. For example, there's that recent bit on the slew of plagiarized papers across the medical community:

181 papers have been classified as duplicates, sharing 85% of their text, on average, with a previous paper. One quarter of these are nearly 100% identical to a previous publication.

While it is troubling that anybody would be so brazen, the fact that they have gotten away with it so far says something: there are a lot of journals. And a lot of papers. For a plagiarist to be successful, it must be the case that neither the editor nor any of the referees have read the original article -- this despite the fact that referees are typically chosen because they are experts in the field the article addresses.

That, I think, is the big news: that it is possible to plagiarize so blatantly.

Which, y'know, makes you wonder who is really doing the research as much as it makes you wonder who is really approving said research as "reviewed by peers" authentic.

But that's medical research; google was unable to find me anything from educators involved in plagiarism, only the usual accusations of networked students being of, well, like minds if you get my meaning.

So is there something more here?

Fireworks Bylaw Passed

Council has passed this bylaw and it is now in force. Enforcement can be by bylaw officer or OPP.

Call the OPP if you do not wish to leave your name this is a problem with the Town's bylaw enforcement that has been brought to my attention. Some people do not trust the confidentiality of the bylaw dept.

All firecraker "noise" types are prohibited at all times. Family fireworks are allowed six days per year and these do not include explosive types. Merchants must post signs and follow display code requirements. No fireworks may be set off within 600 feet of any gasoline storage and that pretty much includes all private property. That should help reduce the noise and fire hazard.

It is not hard to find the source but some calls will focus attention on the problem. Last night when I pulled my boat out in Wiarton at 10 pm there were serious fireworks going off in the area. You would think the OPP would be on the job as you could almost predict the occurence but not a sign so a little focus will be required.

bdenning, I find youtube works really well for making an easily-linked video for posting. I tried to get a camera shot of some smaller bandits that invaded my deck the other night -- they are probably there every night but with the pre-olympics technical details I just happened to be up late enough to catch them trying to pry open the screen on my kitchen window. I guess compared to a rambling Big Baloo, these bandits are positively civilized, just scrambling at the birdfeeder and nightly checking out the compost bin.

When I 1st started this process with the OLRB I can remember the call I got from the "intake guy" where he was tying to convince me to drop the application cuz "no one ever wins these things" and you don't want your name all over (canlii) the web, you know how that will make you look"
It reminds me of the insurance companies where they weed out a few on the 1st round by simply saying nope , if they insist on being stubborn they up the pressure, set unreasonable timelines or legalese "spin" and weed out a few more.
If by chance they run into the small percentage of "insane" people who acts like the kid who keeps asking "why" to a series of questions, They simply say let say he burnt his own house down and drag out the investigation till he starves for a while, he'll settle for 1/3 or a 1/4 of what we should pay. And if we run into a real gem we'll create a system if you are willing to spend mucho denarios, far above what you would get in return for a settlement, which goes toward the stereo upgrade on a lawyers BMW, we may have to pay attention to you.
Simply haveing all your ducks in a row, showing them the facts on paper and presenting a reasonable case isn't enough.
So government has learned from insurance companies.
You are paying for the service and by law you have to pay for the service (taxes) , but gawd forbid if you fight something and use the services provided, you will endure the penalties and costs and according to the OLRB the personal shame of actually having to use the service.
On a related note an honest and sincere letter to the editor was in the Sun Times regarding the BWDSB debacle in trying to convince the masses they are being honest in regards to the class set up for grade 7- 8. Send a letter to the Ministry of Education, help these poor demented and obvious scurges of society out. Those pathetic sad individuals which deserve our pity should be humoured and as therapy a show of support may just do that...
Nothing changes unless one "looney" or S... D....... is not afraid to look a little odd and absorb some flak or grief.
They count on this to weed them out....

Hehe sorry couldnt help it :) Cant wait to see the video.I am on lakeside just off silver lake and a few years back I awoke to a bear sitting on my deck(he had to climb 7 stairs to get up) scratching himself in the morning sun.Last summer he made my 300 lb. garbage box a drive through diner.As well as knocking everyones boxes into the ditch that leads to silver lake.I see they are selling 500 dollar *bear proof* garbage boxes at the home hardware, a buddy of mine who lives in Parry Sound area says they use old freezers(cheap or free) with the compressor removed(environmentaly correct of course) and they then paint them in colours or murals and add a simple hook to it to lock it.Now that is a good alternative and a good way of recycling broken freezers.
I just know Gary is waiting for a solution using a Guinness Keg..but alas..I cannot find one :)

This all really reminds me of the whole Chris Radzinski Wiarton Chlorine-dioxide scandal; Chris was desperate for some traction, ran through the hoops, just wanted the truth to be known, and now we hear there is going to be some sort of official look-see into it, not because of Chris going the normal channels, but because one of those judiciously ignored testimonials on chlorine-damage just happened to originate from a woman who now just happens to be the mayor of said victim town in the affair.

Have you talked to the appropriate political representatives yet? I mean, that's what we pay them to do, to intercede on our behalf when the grindstones of governance run afoul, and we have at least one MPP who's often on the awkward side of policy, and a mayor who knows the Castle Rules first hand.

And we are, after all, peers. That is the whole point of our systems of government. They are not elite aristocrats or blue-blood barons, they are regular everyday people with mortgages and weekly garbage pickup. So they are approachable, all of them. It has also been my experience that the underlings are payed to keep things from their uppers, and will stop at nothing to do so. The best route to the action-button is the direct route to where the buck stops.

And I don't know about the current Prime Minister, but with the last one, all you had to do is to pry open a window and go ask him.
