On the second of Feb if you look over Arther's back yard and see a confluration ( fire) then start the phone chain. If conditions are right I will benignly say " honey I think we should deal with 3 years of xmas trees, plus a few 2x4's, plywood and some skids and pallets...several tires, old propane tanks, army surplus shells and the neighbours car. Once the ball get rolling then what happens ...happens.
Note- I get one person showing up in a druid robe and I see a bunch of sheep show up... I am shutting it down, right away
One Bag of Garbage

Looks like council has changed their minds on this one!
E. AMEND GARBAGE BY-LAW

Discussion took place with respect to amending the garbage by-law to reduce the number of bags
collected from two to one. On a show of hands there was not support for the by-law proceeding.

Recommendation: THAT the by-law not proceed and the number of bags collected remain
at two.

Maybe they do listen?

the fear of the wrath

I am reading the history of this event, and wondering how I could safely incorporate this in my back yard without getting raided by the police. Now... the thought has occurred to me.... I'm not gonna be picketed by some fundementalist's group coming by the busload from Arkansa and have my family name removed from its places of honour in English churches and cemetaries. This isn't some heathenist blasphemous ritual thing is it, inclusive of Celtic sacrificial rituals. And if I look out the next morning, with a big head, and see a true to scale styrofoam copy of stonehenge in my back yard I aint gonna be happy.
But if you ain't living on the edge, you are taking up too much room
And what is a holiday without crafts!

And here's a fun craft idea the whole family can enjoy: make straw doll effigies of your (least) favourite lawyers or poets to bring to the festivities! Guests arrive, they get the traditional greeting, head over to the pyre to cast in their straw devils, hey, everyone has a darn good time!

Its cathartic, its creative, and it involves fire, what more could we want?

I'm going to start mine right now -- I think I'll start with my ex-wife's lawyer ...

Any other nominees? If this spreads we could sell the dolls in the village to boost the local winter-slumped economics, "Get yer BRI-AN MULL-ROONEYS right HE-AR! ... Allen Ginsberg? Yeah, kid, I can get you a ginsberg, but it will cost extra, y'understan' ... but I got a couple of Oscar Wildes left from last year, real cheap! Ok, how about a nice Johnny Cochran? Looks just like him!" ... Raymond Burr? Raymond Burr??!! Ok, I like the eyes but .. oh what the heck, g'wan, toss it in!!

Fun and literary too! we may even get a Trillium for this one!

Failte leat a Bhrid!

Although this all happened on private messages, I thought maybe it was justified in becoming its own thread here, and here, then, is the story so far, the story of what to do about midwinter, the story of why the women folk should greet the visitors with "Fáilte leat a Bhríd" or, as Wayne astutely notices ...

From: wayne tanner
To: garym
Subject: Re: Failte Brede
Date: January 12, 2008 - 10:12pm

g> It goes by many names. The Festival to St. Brigit,
g> patron of lawyers and poets, some call it Imbolc,
g> a light to its dark companion Samhain (aka Hallowe'en),
g> it is the start of spring to the Celts and the Chinese
g> and this year lands on a Saturday (Feb 2)
g>
g> Reason enough?

So it celebrates the burning of lawyers and poets.....????

I really can't think of anything that would draw a raucous crowd...consider the die cast and the justification qualified!

Indeed, may the call go far and wide for the birth of new Sauble Beach tradition! After all, everyone loves a good bonfire!

Just poking my head in.

Our town has upped the cost of per bag garbage to a whopping two dollars per bag. Funny thing, I do not see more recycling happening, at least not in my direct vicinity, maybe I should take a walk tommorow morning.

The problem is with the bag cost is that, if people can't afford to dispose of their garbage, they take it to the arena across the street and dump it in the dumpster, sometimes they do not put it out at all~~and that was happening even when it was only a dollar per bag.

I agree in theory that it may cut down on waste, and might make people recycle more, but some people just don't care. I agree with Ruftic (no nepotism, really). When we have been at the cottage (my parent's home) on a long weekend or even a short one, the transient tourists love to just dump stuff around properties. Especially since the paid parking. . . they try and get a free spot on third ave, and like to leave their calling cards (their refuse). Then my Dad has to clean up after them. Why should tax paying residents have to clean up after these dirty buggers? I am not trying to lump all tourists into one blob, but it only takes a few who do not care.

Maybe a good idea would be to get highschool kids to use some volunteer hours cleaning up the side streets, during weekends in the summer?

Great intentions but us residents will get it in the ear again! Countless times after long weekends in the summer we will find our garbage box and sometimes even our mail box crammed with garbage from day trippers and departing renters. I guess we are supposed to buy a tag to dispose of their garbage?

An Inefficient Truth

Just being aware of our own place in the situation is a big start, and as I posted with the Wiser Earth bit, whether or not the oil reserves peter out, this sort of consciousness is still probably a good thing. Did you know, just for example, that the Information and Communications Technology sector produces a larger carbon footprint than the global aviation industry?

Our lives impact on the environment in many ways. All the choices we make day-to-day, whether to drive or walk to the shops, whether to buy free range or factory-farmed eggs or whether to switch the television off at the plug each night; all these decisions add up.
[ How green are you - Global Action Plan ]

You can click through into that UK site for some various tips on ways to bring these ideas into your everyday, into the school curriculum and into general practice.

Recycling--What's Important

We can have all the wild and wonderful ideas we want, but until we deal with a recycling firm that isn't in it just for the money, we're just whistling up someones skirt. This 1 bag idea is not new. Hanover went to it and they're at about 28%,just slightly higher than us now. The province would like everyone at 60% by 2008. What do you think our chances are in reaching that. There is much more we could be recycling as Gary has said but BASRA doesn't do it because it doesn't make money.Markham Ontario switched to collecting garbage every other week and recycling every week and are sitting at 70% success. Why can't we do that?? Contact the recycling committee in our Town and ask.Councillors Wray Lamont and Dan Kerr are on this committee so ask them why.

You are so right.....the pic says it all...we are in a great place and it is even better now that the daytrippers are gone...we can see the beach and all it has to offer
and yes there are lots of things going on in the world that we dont have here..and thankfully we can then focus on those things that are here
i dont like to see anyone leave because they are picked on or they perceive that they are.....this is the way to get our thoughts out there and get input on these ideas...wont it be great if we can clean up SBP and then with all our success tackle the world?

'Tis official, as of yesterday evening, all the wasps had vacated the trailer. One straggler hung around all day; I managed to get her out around noon and she spent the rest of the afternoon probing the edges trying to get back in -- don't know why since the eucalyptus odor in there is pretty intense -- and I stuffed the WD-40 sprayed paper towels in the likely access points along the roof near the supports (seemed to be a preferred spot.

So far as I can tell they haven't nested elsewhere on the trailer, like underneath or inside the storage box under the seat but I did tap all the fabrics and canvas and didn't rouse more than a moth; I'll give it a more thorough inspection after the rain, but for the moment it appears the wasps and I have come to a property agreement amicable to both sides.

They're baaack

Firth thing this morning, checked the trailer, opened the door, a wasp flew out. damn!

Just long enough to have the thought, "maybe it was a straggler left behind and trapped inside" when another appears over my head, goes straight past me to the trailer door and starts combing every possible visual-T shaped crevasse looking for an entrance, finds one, and disappears within. I tamp the velcro at that spot, open the door to peek and there are now three of them buzzing around the WD-40 soaked paper towel I'd left in the nesting spot. Behind me another three; I closed the door, three in, three out, and watched for exits and entrances.

Under the bed where the rollers meet the guide-rails! There's no plugging that. I spray these spots with a bit of WD-40, because a website said it discouraged them. HA! -- I see them walking on the soaked paper towel! and now the trailer reeks of water-displacer.

Back to the websites, this time looking up 'repellants' and I find the discomforting pronouncement that there is no effective concoctions, but that is on a pest-control site, so it could be suspect, or it could be right on the button. Several others recommend eucalyptus oil, which we happen to have. I soak another paper towel, toss it in.

No sign yet of nest-building, but what this does show is a pretty impressive wasp homing instinct that can not only bring them back to the vicinity of their birth, but even back to the exact site of the nest -- it is the only part of the trailer that interests them, even though it is now hard to get in to, and smells like a congested automechanic.

Likely the nest site smells to them, somehow, vibrationally attractive despite the distractions. rats! -- one thing repeated in a lot of websites is never crush a wasp as the body is said to release powerful pheromones that will spread the alarm back to the swarm; similar pheromones are also used in some wasp traps, so we do know they respond to such things.

Have to keep a watch on them today to see if they give up. Extradition, it appears, may not be an effective deterrent. Or perhaps I need to exile them much farther away next round.
