Perfect choice for the video

Perfect choice for the video Gary — couldn't have been better!
I'd love to recreate the video, shot for shot, but a 2008 version!
Anyway, congrats on the 5 years!
k.

Summer of Love

Yeah, yeah, I know, the video, it isn't from 2002, it isn't even from 1992 or 1982 ... it's from the summer after the Summer of Love, a flashback peek at Sauble Beach, 1969!

I was going to post this one from 2007 because it does show the whole strip from Lakeshore right up the main drag, a 'skyline' that is, for better or worse, already nostalgic, and I almost posted this one if only for the line "I never knew I needed so many people" :)

But no, I chose instead to share some love and innocence, and extra brag points to anyone here who positively identifies themselves (or their parents) in any of the scenes in that film ;)

PIPL info

I've scanned and "PDF'd" the Piping Plover at Sauble information brochure. You can download it
right here.

The fenced-in area is technically called an "exclosure". We want to prevent egg and future chick predation from area predators such as gulls, fox, raccoon, rats, etc.

There is a small rectangular-shaped ingress/egress opening for the male and female PIPLs to use.

The male and female "take turns" egg-sitting (roughly every three hours there is a change of egg-sitter). There were no eggs at the time the exclosure was built, hence both brids were not present when the exclosure fence was hastily installed by a crew of people. It was constructed very quickly. Then the perimeter tape barrier was put up.

This is a joint effort by OMNR, Canadian Wildlife Service, and many volunteer helpers from Sauble and surrounding areas. We need more volunteers, so if any Peninsular readers would like an opportunity to "nest sit" for a few hours, call the number(s) provided on the provided information pamphlet PDF.

We had an incident last Saturday night where some young drunken boys were shooting fireworks at the exclosure around 10:30 pm. When they entered the restricted area, a watchful resident yelled at them and they ran away. Idiotic behaviour! We'll have round-the-clock monitors onsite for the July 1 long weekend.

How DO you fence a plover?

Thanks for the pics, I think they turned out just right, certainly as good as any shot we ever got of Princess Margaret topless.

But having seen it, now I'm curious: How do you go about erecting an enclosure like that without terrifying the poor mama-bird and frightening her away? Obviously whatever they did works, but how is it done? Just wait for mama to go for lunch and snap it up before she gets back?

Plover pic

A pic of the exclosure used to protect the nesting pair of Piping Plovers and their nest of four eggs, and a horrid pic of one of the plovers sitting on the nest. sabrinus does not have fancy camera equipment and one cannot get closer than 30 metres so this is all ya get!

Looks like a job for ... FREECYCLE!

I don't mind the post here and I think I might try my new-fangled node-mover to shift it over to your blog, but y'know, there already is a perfectly fine way to do stuff like this: GB-Freecycle has a box over there on the right side of the homepage, and if you follow their trail back to yahoogroups (or my posting about them here -- use the fancy new Google Searchbox!) you can probably find a FreeCycle in Hamilton!.

That said ... tell me more about this sound card ...

It was a great open house

I was VERY impressed by MIP's YTC.He gave me the royal tour, and let me emphasize this to everyone, you will be hard pressed to find anything like this in our so called big cities.(and I work at a university so I think I have a little insight)The technology available is awesome, the well thought out plans..of not only learning and doing and *building*, but also break time and excursions, will make this an opportunity that your kids need to experience.Give them a bit of a break from the MSN or ICQ routine, where they learn to gossip and argue, let them actually learn and get a big step up to the future.
Now...I wonder if Mipette(ok ok I know its Sofia!)will start baking classes...;)
I'd like to also add a little note to this,Sauble Beach is home to 2 of the most knowledable I.T. people I have ever met,Gary and MIP,it bodes well for the future of the area.
