I think it's more late 50s, early 60s, but I'll have to find out for sure. If it falls in the range of the later 60s, where in Wiarton would I go to find out this sorta thing? Public Records? Heading up again this weekend (though, I assume wherever I'd find this info, it wouldn't be open on the weekend).

You said it's a newer cottage.If its recent, late 60's -70s and above, all septics had to have a permit, and you may find the plans at Wiarton.The designs are mostly the same until recently where filters and after treatment is added.Those you can find by googling septic.
Some of the older cottages had 45 gallon drums and NO bed(my brother found this out 8 years ago when he bought on Gould Lake, had to put in a holding tank cause of the older lots being so close to the water.

Yea, called Vaughn earlier this week and he said he'd take care of it before the weekend and just leave the bill in the door. Great guy and great service — thanks to everyone who suggested them!

I have one question, which is on/off topic. Since I have no history with the tank (ie. plans or anything about it) — is there any way for me, other than getting in touch with the original owner, to learn more about the "design" of it?

They do a fine job(they'll even do it when you aren't there and leave your bill in the mailbox), they will check both covers and chop any roots away.You should check the distribution box( could be 10 or more feet away from the tank and could be buried) for roots.(that is depending on when it was put in)

We use Grey-Bruce Septic. They are good. Last time it cost use about $100.

My wife's family purchased an older cottage in Sauble (just down the road from their even older cottage, which they sold) about 5 years ago. She wasn't my wife at the time, so I wasn't around. The two of us are "the caretakers" and we keep the place up pretty well. This past year we installed a UV purification system for the water (water testing results came back negative for any contaminants and our water is now safe and drinkable). One thing that I've been meaning to get around to is checking out the septic system to see if it needs to be pumped, etc. The thing is, no one in her family knew where the access to the tank was. Luckily, we were up there all last week and the old owners happened to come by to check their old place out (lovely older couple).
