What garym has is the common garden tortoise beetle (Plagiometriona clavata).

According to Steve Marshall, entomologist extraordinaire and Bruce Peninsula cottager, the larvae of these true beetles hold a protective shield of excrement on their recurved tails, which they hold over top of their bodies.

One of their favourite foods is Chinese Lantern (Physalis sp.).

A'right. Dead chuffed I am on this, luv. Ya got a real posh-fancy chart-topper, bit of all right: Gold bug tortoise frightfully like and straight up, that one is. Nice one, VG.

I'd get on 'is lug holes to check 'im for gold, but the cheeky bug's nicked off, out larking in the garden.

I had one of those visitors a while back as well. I wasn't sure what it was. At first I thought it was bird poop, then when I got closer, I realized it was something else, but never did positively identify it. . .there is a website that will actually name the bug for you, and give you some info.

Mom and Dad just found a Hummingbird Moth in their garden up at Sauble a week ago.
