I absolutely remember the Sauble Elm, and it was titanic. I'd need a map now to be absolutely sure, but you drove towards Hepworth from the Sauble sign and - I think - on one of those country roads just before reaching Sauble Golf & Country Club you made a left. Dad always did the driving and, remember, I was 6 years old at the time - so memory's a bit hazy. We stopped by the edge of the road - was there a sign? Then you went through a wire fence gate and took a path through a semi-wooded area. After just a minute or two ... there you were, at the foot of the biggest darn tree you ever saw. The thing was *massive* around the bottom, and stretched off so high that, standing at the base, you were virtually looking straight up with no end in sight. An amazing, beautiful thing. I was so sorry when I heard it died. Wasn't the stump kept for several years as a landmark? With a plaque? I think so. Wonder if it's still there.

You read correct..yes elms have all but disappeared in the last 50 years, but its a valid question, does anyone remember the famous Sauble Elm? If so..please post and let us know about it..and share any pictures you may have(if you have any troubles knowing how to put pictures online log in and send a message to..Gary :D .) Apparently there was a HUGE Elm tree that succumbed to Dutch elm disease in 1967 or 1968 that had grown along the bank of the Sauble river somewhere(where is that?) between Hepworth and Sauble, I would even like to see the location where it was if anyone knows, this tree was magnificent, and estimates place it at a sapling at 1700..
thats some time ago..
please read more about it by clicking on this LINK
