SBP & the MNR Bear Grants

More on the Bear Story, from the minutes of council a recommendation was passed to investigate a public works program application to the MNR hoping to qualify for $20K in funding:

Mr. Scheifley and Mr. Weber from the MNR conducted an interesting power point presentation re living with black bears. During discussion they pointed out that the contact number relating to sighting or problems with bears is 1-866-514-BEARS. The gentlemen also discussed a report from a study indicating the genetic difference of the bears on the peninsula vis a vis other bear populations and the province. The difference relates basically to the isolation of the population with limited corridors connecting the general population and raises concerns that fragmentation of the existing peninsula population could result in them becoming extinct over time.
[ Council Minutes: May 14, 2007 ]

bears

Actually, I believe the MNR did a study a few years back on the bears of the Bruce Peninsula. And if memory serves me, I think they concluded that because of the geography and thence the need to inbreed, these bears are physically and biologically different from the rest of the bears in the province.

And you know you are from the North when a bear wanders into the football field at my daughter's high school - no, not Wiarton, OSCVI. I guess he was looking to expand the gene pool!

I am trying to think of

I am trying to think of something intelligent or remotely witty to write back, but I don't have the "fortitude" haha.

Seriously, I think bears are great, even porcupines tug at my heartstrings, the only entity that I would want wiped off the face of the planet would be spiders. (Ya, that would disrupt the whole ecosystem, but I won't digress, more than I already am)

I just wondered if the one that was around on 3rd was ever caught, because no one has heard anything. No one knew where the trap was set. It is still a mystery.

That being said, if I had my choice between dealing with the Blyth local, nutty "Drive By Fry Guy" and a bear, I would take the bear relaxing on my front porch. At least the bear could have personality and potential, although I am sure that if one was actually attacked by a bear, they would have a completely different outlook. If it was just a benign bear, that would be okay.

I have had two close encounters with bears, one at Algonquin, and one at Deptarture Lake ( Departure Lake was self inflicted).

Supposedly, a source says that there are actually bears that are specific to the escarpment on the Bruce Peninsula, it was on TVO, and they make their little dens in the rock caves. Neato burrito!

I see by your coat my friend, you're from the other side

Back before I left the big smoke, I woke up one peaceful Bathurst-St.Clair middle-night to find a dazed lug standing in my bedroom doorway. "Can I have $20?" he said, and I said "No!" and he looked at me all confused and left. Two nights later neighbours of mine had a similar early-hours visitation, only they were slaughtered on the spot and left for the police to find. I moved out to Caledon that month, and from there up to Sauble.

And if you ask me, I think I'd rather the bears thankyouverymuch.

Shortly after we moved here the morning radio weather lady told of how she'd come home one day to find her door ajar, and fearing burglars, called the OPP who popped round, checked it out, and emerged to say, "You been robbed, ma'am. Took everything in the fridge and chewed up the sofa really bad." -- I told a local-raised friend of mine about the Toronto walk-in shooting and how they just opened the door to the point of a shotgun. "Man oh man, if that happened 'round here," he said, "At least I'd know 'em."

One last one, I promise: Old Annie was a den mother for a lot of Toronto folkies back in the 70's, feed us, give us floor space to crash. Lived up in Etobicoke in a line of run down apartment blocks. One day two big fellas came to the door and said, "You better find some place else to live." and dumped her out, no help, no thanks for the decades of your rental business, just a get-out and good luck with the apartment hunting all alone at age 70-something.

I've been around this great earth some, and I ain't never seen a bear do that to nobody.

No, leaving your nuts outside is never a good idea. . .could get a tad chilly ;)

That's whacked, bears are cute on the Discovery Channel, but when they are on your deck and lounging, it's a different story. So just yelling works, you don't have to bang woks or crepe pans?

It's amazing how he made himself so at home, I can just picture it.

I actually woke up a few years back and it was on my old nokia, pre cel phone pic days, sms to Gary and almost everyone I knew, there was a bear sitting on my deck scratching himself in the sun looking at silver lake.I slid open the sliding door and yelled at him/her( i didnt really want to check) and I dont know who was more startled..me or the bear..and here is the coop doo graceee, my deck is at least 6 feet above the ground so the darned bear was up sitting on my picnic table I had on my deck..of course eating the nuts I had out for the chippy's....
I learned my lesson..NEVER leave your nuts outside.

oops, meant 3rd ave north. My chromosome donors had a few incidents with bears a while ago.

Now I am never going to get to sleep with that tune in my noodle.

Maybe, Gary's dunes should be a call in topic on Coast to Coast. . .seems like hotbed for unexplained phenomena. www.coasttocoastam.com

..sung to the tune that Gary knows well..*oh dem golden slippers..*
and..a collectible on VINYL ;))))))
Its more than one bear, there are a few, and since they have been ..now pick your choice cause I aint a gonna argue here:
1.been reintroduced in the area from Algonquin Park
2.Been breeding cause of protection
3.been breeding cause of illegal type dumps which arent really illegal
4.UFO beacons from Garys Dune are making them appear
5.they are here to drive Wayne home from the horn(I think this is my fav theory)
6.they are actually NOT bears but monster turkeys from Wiarton
7. its a protected ecosystem will soon appear on ebay
:D

We even have a bear in the air??

It was quite an enjoyable experiencing the new Greenhorns last night.Over a few brown pops, and some karaoke in the background, Gary and I solved all the worlds problems.Well..ok not quite..but we did solve one big question that has been on Everyones mind. Yes..you guessed..what do you do when there is a bear around your house in SBP!

“By the time we was hittin shy town them bears was getting smart…”

The ministry of Natural Resources has posted some information on their website, and are also handing out fridge magnets with the same info that is on their website.

“ we prepared to cross the jersey shore, prepared to cross the line, I could see the bridge was lined with bears…”

Basically you call your local police, 911 if there is imminent danger, or the O.P.P..Keep your head about you and all will be fine…

“yeah them smokies was thick as bugs on a bumper, they even had a bear in the air…”

The bear sightings should be starting to slow down now, with winter coming close…

“well mercy sakes good buddy we gonna back outta here..so keep the buttons off your glasses and the bears off yer tail….”
