An unattended fire is ( please read the bylaw) a violation of the burning bylaw, because it is hard to have an available means of extiquishing the fire if you are passed out on the couch.
I have never heard of or been made aware of a "caller" getting nailed for a bill from the fire departmaent ( this would go through the town) for calling in a fire. There has been cases where 3 guys in Muskoka chairs have wondered why the hell all these fire guys have stormed into their back yard, cuz an overzealous neighbour or someone with a bone to grind has called in the fact that Ozzy was a little too loud and oh by the way there is a large fire going on which when evaluated is contained in a firepit which meets the regulations.
That said no one in any way shape nor form should ever be afraid of calling in any situation because they think they might get nailed with a bill. More than once I have talked to a patient who when asked the question why they hesitated in making a call, was cuz they thought they would get billed for the ambulance ride. Not the way to do business.
Do not make a decision based on the fact that :"could we get billed so we won't make the call".
Use your head, evaluate, and think rationally before you call . That is all I ask.

Unattended Open Pit Fires At Cottages

I have a question and perhaps Wayne can help me with it. My neighbours are concerned about a problem rental cottage in our area with a firepit that tends to be too close to neighbours and trees. This rental has sometimes had 15 or more people saying there and they will sometimes build a huge fire then take off leaving it unattended. The smoke is also a problem.

My question is if I call the fire dept about putting out the unattended fire who will be charged the fire response fee? Will it be the rental cottage owner or the person who called it in? Neighbours, not myself, have talked to the owner and received no cooperation. We all believe our properties are in danger but none of us wants a $2000 bill from the Chief or obviously to be named as the caller in fire reports.

I have been made aware that one or two other neighbourhoods may have the same problem. Wayne?
