Yet another reason why we should say an ix-ney on the Albatros-necklace of Bruce C and plan instead for the real future of power generation:

The U.S Department of Energy (DOE) today released a first-of-its kind report that examines the technical feasibility of harnessing wind power to provide up to 20 percent of the nation's total electricity needs by 2030. Entitled "20 Percent Wind Energy by 2030", the report identifies requirements to achieve this goal including reducing the cost of wind technologies, citing new transmission infrastructure, and enhancing domestic manufacturing capability.

To recap, we're sitting here right smack in the middle of off-the-scale off-shore wind regions and the US is going gangbusters for eco-power to the tune of 20% within 12 years on wind alone and what was that schedule to flip on the hot-rod Bruce C? Half that time? You can barely amortize a family van in eight years.

It's because, as educators, they are SUPPOSED to be smart, and so it stands to reason they would make smart demands from their IT vendor of choice ...

"HP listened to our needs and now is delivering a product designed by education for education."

It may sound odd for HP to take its first step into Linux by way of education, but there is money to be made in the education vertical. Lenovo Director of Software Strategy Debra Kobs-Fortner said, for example, that Lenovo had seen its best business so far for its Linux-powered ThinkPads in the American education market.

Mind you, not everyone is so sharp: Nicholas Negroponte accused free software advocates of being "open source fundamentalists" and said open source software "hampered usability" and "scared developers", and thus ordered the OLPC XO to downgrade back to Windows; Richard Stallman still hopes old Nick might yet see the light and turn his turn-around around before he blunders it asunder:

Those who have supported the OLPC project with their effort or their money may well feel betrayed. However, those concerns are dwarfed by what is at stake here: whether the XO is an influence for freedom or an influence for subjection.

Good to see them returning to the beach and I'll bet the sight brought a big sigh of relief from all those who volunteered to guard their nest last summer.

Flickr Workshop Anyone?

Today's piping plovers caused me to pause and ask, "Would anyone be interested in a one-evening mini-seminar on 'How to use Flickr to post your SBP Photos'?"

Doesn't need to be anything fancy, we could do it over the Peninsular chat-channel (or over gTalk for those of you with our free SBP 'teledyn.com' email accounts), or we could even meet in our local beach-side Internet Café on some warm pre-season evening.

True, we already have our quick guide tutorial How To Photo-Blog To The SBP that sets out the whole process step by step, but maybe that's still a bit of a jump-ahead for those new to the whole shared digital imaging thing.

I was just thinkin' how, when we started this website most folks were still using film cameras, but today most everyone has a digital, and a good many have photo-phones, and, well, once you get past the sign-up process, sharing the SBP you see with the world is really really easy, literally a one-click thing for most phones, at worst a tidy two-step for the home-uploaders, and as you can see from the photos already in the SBP group, this place has ample beauty to share!

So what do you think? Online chat or at MacBeth's? Before the 2-4 or after? If there's interest, I don't mind sparing the time to get y'all up to speed!

One small detail

Ok, the fine print, yes, the catch, the thing that I forgot to mention, just one small little detail so small I thought it maybe not worth the mention but nonetheless include now for the sake of whole-picture completeness: The ortegrity members can not get paid until after they deliver.

Minor thing, really, but probably needed to be said. In nature this means the anthill starves if it endlessly deliberates, in the film industry it means the principals get eviction notices if the show doesn't go on or overruns the grant, and in commercial enterprise it generally means that efficient project success is in everyone's best interest.

Well ... as the guy with the "Linux" license plates and having literally (co)wrote the book(s), I guess it behooves me to answer your Linux questions, VG, but first, here's a true story that happened just the other day:

Facebook message from a 'local artist': I just bought this cool EEE-PC and I need to install this program for work and, well, it's linux ... so I'm all confused. Can I SKYPE you?

Not a problem I say. The call comes, called right from the little Asus micro-laptop I might add, and we go through the process, and I go through the same steps here on my Ubuntu machine because, well, there's not a whole lot of difference between Linux breeds. I find it works for me once I just follow the manufacturer's instructions but ...

"Oh, wait," they say, "I didn't accept the license agreement! I just noticed the checkbox, checked it, and it's working now."

The salient detail being, of course, that they were able to facebook me, skype me, AND install their work software themselves despite the 'different' operating system, and that the 'trouble' was simply an OS-neutral case of not paying attention to what was actually there on the screen :)

But what I find fun and amusing was their immediate and tacit assumption that Linux had to be the source of the difficulty, because it was different, because (likely) of the heaps of anti-linux full-page all-media propaganda spread (to the tune of ONE BILLION DOLLARS) by its primary and proprietary competitor, and fun too that all that massive disinformation had here been completely dispelled in one simple software install exercise.

So, how do you like your Eee-PC?

QED. If you're interested, Bruce has one tethered to the front counter down at Renewed Computers, tho its the littler and cheaper edition.

btw, I've never had a virus or a spyware or a trojan-horse or a script-kiddie intruder or even a BSoD. Not even once. Ever. What's it like?
