Thank you Mayor

Posted by bub on April 25, 2008 - 11:41pm

A big thank you to the mayor and all involved (including the posters here on sbp and the original source) for finally bringing what we have talked about for ages here. And may I state what I have said before..check the US and Canadian Gov't websites Chlorine Dioxide is a registered pesticide..how do YOU feel about being a guinea pig?
"South Bruce Peninsula Mayor Gwen Gilbert and Grey-Bruce-Owen Sound MP Larry Miller are promising to raise questions about an eight-year-old, University of Toronto drinking water experiment in Wiarton.

The mayor was reacting to a federal court ruling that National Sciences and Engineering Research Council officials did not have to order an investigation into questions about research involving chlorine dioxide in drinking water in Wiarton. Both she and Miller expect to work “to get some accountability,” Gilbert said.

9000 PC's in Switzerland switch to Linux

Posted by bub on April 13, 2008 - 12:23pm

Interesting to say the least, but not unexepected, is the news on the wire that Switzerland has followed France, Russia, and quite a few like minded countries in switching to open source O/S's, and not only saving money in ridiculous licence fees, but allowing the savings to be put directly back into the school system.Do you think someone somewhere here will at least LOOK at the idea?? I wonder....
From the Geneva Tribune:
"Beginning from next term, all computers at schools in the Swiss canton of Geneva will be switched to Ubuntu Linux only.

Geneva newspaper Tribune de Geneve reports today that from September 2008 all computers at schools that currently are dual-boot MS Windows and Linux will have MS Windows removed and become FOSS (Free Open Source Software) only.

Besides lower costs for the administration, students will also profit from the use of Ubuntu, as they then will be able to use the same applications at home without additional cost.

Happy Birthday SBP!

Posted by bub on March 22, 2008 - 12:12am

The countdown is on...and here we go..get ready, get out your brews, or your tea or even your vinyl record collection(ahem pay attention Lisa) because in just a few short days, it will be the fifth anniversary of this "lil" blog that grew. Brought on as an idea, as the new voice of SBP, with a lot of hard work and extra (unpaid) time by Gary, and May, to try and bring us together as a community and post our thoughts, photos, lives, and trials and tribulations.
Its been a long process, and sometimes it has meandered out of the way, but very rare has anyone been censored or banned, and it remains an open forum to all.I give credit to Gary and May for this, its like a large family, we all have our own ideas, but deep down we mostly want what we believe is best for us all.

Grey-Sauble watershed in good shape!

Posted by bub on March 20, 2008 - 10:34pm

Testing of the Grey-Bruce watersheds have come up with a passing grade for all watersheds in terms of water quality. There is a concern over the riparian zones(A riparian zone is the interface between land and a flowing surface water body) along the Sauble river, and plans are being made to remedy this by encouraging planting of trees and plants along the river banks to discourage erosion.Congratulations for the excellent water quality for our area, a very encouraging sign!
Lets endeavour to keep it that way :)

Income tax net file..for free or cheap!

Posted by bub on March 16, 2008 - 2:58pm
Internet tax filing is increasing each year, and the programs that you buy to do it are also increasing in price. Here are two options for you. One is called Studio tax available at http://www.studiotax.com ,a free fully loaded/functional tax program, that unfortunately is only available for windows( and you must use the microsoft .NET framework..which you can get free from microsoft) Another alternative is called Cute Tax.Available at http://www.cutetax.ca . If your income is below 25,000 you can use this for free, if above one return is 10.00 and up to 15 returns is 25.00 .Both programs are recognized by CRA's NETFILE system.Cute Tax, is completely compatible with linux/mac/unix and also with most browsers. So go ahead..save some money!!

The warming Of Sauble Beach

Posted by bub on January 10, 2008 - 12:11am

We have all been warned about global warming and the effects on the environment..a new thing. We are experiencing such mild weather that flood warnings have been issued for the rivers and streams..and let me quote:
"....Elgin County farmers got in some early plowing; a Proton farmer tapped some maple trees, found the sap running. At Goderich the courthouse lawn had to be trimmed......The Sauble River, the Etobicoke, the Humber, the Sydenham and the Big Head boiled over their banks. As the bottom went out of roads in the Maritimes. logging virtually stopped...."
Ahah! got you...quotes from happenings in 1946, of which you can read more of in June In January.
