Posted by mxyzptlk on May 5, 2008 - 7:36am

The Piping Plover's have returned to the same spot at Sauble Beach! My children spotted them yesterday (May 4, 2008). Here are a couple of photos:

A Quarry on the Sauble River?

Posted by mxyzptlk on January 1, 2008 - 4:31pm

Everest Tree Farms Inc recently made their third application for a licence to operate a Category 2 "Below Groundwater" quarry on Part Lot 12 Concession 10 Amabel Twsp in the Town of South Bruce Peninsula. The location of the proposed quarry is near the junction of the Sauble River and Spring Creek, a well know fish sanctuary and habitat. In order to get the licence they must also get amendments to the Official Plan and Zoning Bylaws. The property is currently zoned Agricultural and used for the tree farm. They are proposing to dig a 16 meter deep hole (think 4 or 5 story building) into the bedrock adjacent to the Sauble River to extract 'decorative' stone that is available elsewhere in the municipality in areas already designated for Industrial Extraction.

computers don't make mistakes

Posted by mxyzptlk on October 12, 2007 - 5:02pm

in today's sun times, Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound chief returning officer Linda Van Aalst says:

Van Aalst confirmed computers caused enormous inconvenience for both election workers and a large percentage of especially rural voters. The computer program that created the voter cards and lists electronically could not seem to accept many rural addresses, often sending voters to polling stations often far from their homes.

Even after local Elections Ontario workers rewrote addresses to remove lot and concession numbers and used new county fire numbers and updated municipalities since amalgamation eight years ago, the computer in many cases added wrong addresses, Van Aalst said.

Greenpeace Protest

Posted by mxyzptlk on September 1, 2007 - 7:29am

you have probably read about the recent greenpeace protest over delivery of coal to the nanticoke generating station. three arrested, scores of police in boats and helicopters, etc. too bad the protesters weren't natives, there would probably be an entirely different response. two systems of justice is not right.
i have no problem with peaceful protest, but blocking rail lines, highways, and ships is not peaceful in my opinion as they almost always escalate to violence of some sort. my son read the article in the sun times and laughed at the name greenpeace ... he said it should be called green-terrorism.

Aging - A.A.A.D.D.

Posted by mxyzptlk on July 11, 2007 - 7:56am

Recently, I was diagnosed with A.A.A.D.D. -
Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder.
This is how it manifests:
I decide to water my garden.
As I turn on the hose in the driveway,
I look over at my car and decide it needs washing.
As I start toward the garage,
I notice mail on the porch table that
I brought up from the mail box earlier.
I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car.
I lay my car keys on the table,
put the junk mail in the garbage can under the table,
and notice that the can is full.
So, I decide to put the bills back

spanking

Posted by mxyzptlk on June 14, 2007 - 2:56pm

i read on the editorial page of the wednesday june 13 2007 owen sound sun times a letter sent in by former mayor carl (ig)noble (i love that ... thanks whoever coined that one). in his letter to the editor he supports the notion of spanking to teach respect. given the antics and lack of respect shown by some former and current members of council, methinks someones mommy didnt spank them enough!

Idling

Posted by mxyzptlk on June 10, 2007 - 11:09am

i have to laugh at some of the letters to the editor i have seen recently regarding drive-thru's and idling bylaws. rather than create another bylaw, why don't people just stop using drive-thrus?

Tim Hortons in Wiarton

Posted by mxyzptlk on May 17, 2007 - 7:19am

I thought ex-councillor Kirkland bought the old Wiarton school property to build an senior's home and daycare centre. I also thought part of the building was to be saved. Now I see in the paper that the town gets $450,000 and a Tim's is going in. Maybe I'm confused about the properties. Can someone explain what is going on?

the enemies of sauble beach

Posted by mxyzptlk on April 1, 2007 - 4:11pm

someone should be held accountable for the use, by the "enemies (tic) of sauble beach", of pressure treated lumber to construct a boardwalk to, umm, "protect" the dunes. we are asking people to use this boardwalk; imagine all the children walking (running) on the boardwalk this summer in their wet bare feet. please take a moment to read the following articles:

ecology center: pressure-treated wood factsheet

environmental defense: pressure treated woods releasing poison
